8 THE ADA PRACTICAL GUIDE TO OSHA TRAINING If you spot conditions that look hazardous, there is probably an OSHA standard that covers the condition, and it should be corrected. Even if there is no specific applicable OSHA standard, all employers have a “general duty” to keep the workplace free from recognized hazards. This is known as the OSHA General Duty Clause. One of the best ways to identify hazards is to encourage employees to report them to the dentist or office compliance manager. Another way to make sure you are in compliance with OSHA’s standards is to request a consultation from an OSHA consultation service. Consultations are confidential, free, and no citations are issued or penalties imposed. The consultations are delivered by state governments. You can obtain the name of the agency in your state that provides this service by visiting www.osha.gov/dcsp/smallbusiness/ consult.html. Before using this service, employers should be aware that they must commit in advance to make any recommended changes. Failure to do so may result in an OSHA inspection.
